Rucktion Records is proud to present an accomplished debut release by the UK's BORSTAL. "At Her Majesty's Pleasure" features 6 raging tracks of classic NYHC influenced hardcore, played in an unmistakably UKHC style and brought to you by an all-star line-up from across the world of extreme music.
Featuring members of bands as diverse as Dripback, Knuckledust, King Of Pigs and Brujeria, BORSTAL bring to mind the latter part of the 80's when the crossover genre was spawned, but also bledn their furious hardcore with the classic Oi sounds of the early 80's. There is even a direct relationship all the way back to those formative times, as guitaris Lee is the son of Arthur Kitchener from Oi legends The Last Resort, to whom BORSTAL pay homage through a re-imagining of their classic "King Of The Jungle".
Switching between gruff hardcore speed and mid-tempo punkier antherms, "At Her Majesty's Pleasure" is where shouted back-ups meet football terrace singalongs. Both are standard for the genre, but there is plenty of additional variety and character on display here, a rich array of influences under the umbrella of hardcore punk. Past meets future as the band switch effortlessly between longer epics and brutal basics, from the relentless in your face assault of "Karma" to the multi-layered "Vicious Circles" with its haunting and atmospheric chorus, that will doubtless be lodged in your brain after a couple of listens. But lyrically the band have their feet firmly planted in the present, tackling society's problems with an overriding message of unity, loyalty and defiance - standing strong in the face of the problems life throws at you and finding your own solutions.Even more diversity is added to the mix as several songs have parts sung in Spanish, due to singer Pierre's Peruvian roots.
All of BORSTAL's influences are timeess but nevertheless are given an overhaul for the modern age by the high quality of musicianship and recording, and the sheer ambition and determination on display. BORSTAL may be a new band but the members are old hands with years of experience under their belts, and their ferocity and desire to unleash their rage on the world undeniably shines through.
