You should know the score by now, for decades the London hardcore scene has been a hotbed of creativity. With a few additions along the way, the usual suspects will always get together in one form or another to keep the legacy going. This next chapter in the capital’s rich history is brought to you by LOW LIFE, who smack you round the head with 12 tracks of pummelling and ferocious beatdown hardcore on their ambitious full length debut, ‘Too Hard 2 Die’.
Featuring members of veteran acts such as Bun Dem Out, 50 Caliber, Dropset, King Street and Kartel, LOW LIFE proudly wear their influences on their sleeve as they honour London’s signature sound, while also displaying some versatility and variety along the way. There’s plenty to enjoy here for listeners familiar with the band’s earlier work such as ‘OSK’, which reappears here along with the follow-up ‘OSK II’. ‘Too Hard 2 Die’ also sees LOW LIFE broaden their horizons with longer, more introspective tracks like ‘Undertow’ or ‘Trigger Warning’. Plenty of contrast is supplied with swift bangers such as ‘Loyalties’, ‘Dirty Work’ or ‘The Lesson’ which barely last two minutes and get straight to the point - trimmed of any fat and simultaneously brutal and catchy.
Front man Murray’s ultra abrasive and distinctly English vocals are complimented by an all-star cast of guests from UKHC past and present, as well as further afield. Appearances from members of London legends Ironed Out and Nine Bar, Sweden’s Steel Freight, Wears Me Out, Craw LBU and Swoz from Hard Target diversify and enrich ‘Too Hard 2 Die’, adding levels and layers to the listening experience.
